Entente Cordiale

I. Juliet forever
Forever is only the spark of birth
When forever is an old, old man,
I will still be your friend–

II. A minute passes and we become a minute closer
Every routine action becomes a dancing, thrilling reaction
As the clock ticks, the heart beats
And time, like our lifeblood,
Becomes a stronger and richer friend
Forever–

III. A comedy of manners, a tragedy of errors,
Failed timing and brilliant ad lib
We still have lines to learn, songs to perfect
Faces to affect
Not yet time to raise the curtain
Not yet time to speak our lines
But, oh Romance, what a show it will be
When the players take the stage
Forever–

IV. Instant memories in an unseen scrapbook
Pasted to the pages of my mind ever I see–
A contagious star-warm smile, flares of happiness
Bathing everything in its orbit…
A thunderous chromatic challenge for control
Between the armies of grey and green
In the meadows of your eyes…
A sinuous and starless waterfall of sun-touched hair
Spilling down, down, down
So that Nature itself has to stop and take a picture…
An innocent obsession born in Mandarin shoes
Ancient, Asian, and Bible-black…
I remember–
I remember an isolated, ionized spot of scintillant skin
Turbulent in the cascade’s lower mists,
A leveling-off of the deep canals that roll parallel
Down the monument that is your slender neck
A quaking altar, lost in the terminals of maddening ebony pools–
But a single touch can send a warm, quaking, thumping shiver
Down the long, long miles
From the waterfall to the starless Orient below
I remember…
These things I have
Forever…

V. No answers are easy, no gains come free…
And sometimes we fall down easily
And sometimes we put down noisily
And sometimes we break down pitifully
And sometimes we reach out earnestly
To clasp a friend in mind
When you fall, or curse, or ache, or search
You have here, for a day or for a while
A friend
Forever…

VI. Like a handful of loose change
I toss my dreams on the counter
Some shine with fresh worth
Some are dull and worn
But all have their value
And I count up the clattering coins
To gauge how far they’ll take me…

Bright Juliet
If you ever need a dime
I’ll be your friend forever
Forever
